One of the things I like about twitter is that it basically brings back the love of the command line from the old MS-DOS or unix etc..
There is utter simplicity assoicated with the idea of a command line interface. Its limited no doubt, no fuzzy love GUI messing you up, its just you and whatever parameters you can set up.
Twitter may of started out as a simple “hey im eating a taco” microblogging tool but its evolving into a “@youthere ++ $TTY hell ya baby” tool.
I like to think of the command line as short codes for the mind. They do just what you want, simple, straight, BAM no going back. And in twitter there really is no going back, tweet it and its out, you can’t go back and edit it. Same with formating a hard disk in the command line, you do it and well, good luck reversing that. Sure enough as software evolved we got further and further away from the awesome power and utter destruction a command line often gave us. Now most of our software is all pretty, you have options, an arrow is your friend, mouse wonder boy and brother undo at your side.
I say nay to that, bring back the command line’s power, and twitter is doing that.
Developers are racing to take advantage of this sprawling audince that grows by leaps and bounds every day it seems.
Stocktwits is a great example of a company that is building itself right off of twitters basic command line.
Hashtags is another.
Even Piqqem, a new site i’ve been playing with today has its own twitter support.
So if you plan on making something, leverage it. Leverage it with the awesome power of the twitter induced command line. It will feel thrilling to boot.
