Patent Pending Larry Based Reality
I’m a huge fan of Augmented Reality. Huge, like massive. But like anything the minute the masses got into I’ve begun to dislike the trend I see, the manipulation, the gimmick ware and too frickin obvious hacks that are being passed off as augmented reality. Dare I say that much if not all of the upcoming augmented reality bits and such will be 98% gimmick ware for the first year or so.
It saddens me really. I love AR, its fricking bad ass if you take it to where it really needs to go and not do petty and simple where’s the nearest taco bell wayfinding over your camera viewer crap. That is cheap lame ass epic fail augmented reality. Its really not that much better than my own patented Larry Based reality. I mean Larry can point you to a Fridays.. is that the big NEED, the killer app for AR? If that’s the case, time to check out- and quick like.
AR is a serious sore spot for me lately. Everything I see is too textbook, too obvious - take typical gps data and overlay it on your camera viewer as if you’ll always hold your camera above your head to figure out where the Arbys is next door.. its probably next door. Plus the fact that tracing the path to another Arbys is probably much easier to do via looking at the map and following the streets- AR presented like this makes ya foolishing think you can just float over to that place. And don’t even get me started on the mass cognitive noise of looking at what is right now just a few layers of data in view - soon this will be hundreds of layers. Take everything the browser had to deal with and repeat it for AR because its the same story.
Which leads to overall adoption. Its gonna be gimmick ware meets choke ware meets 100,000 apps with maybe 10 that really stick are swiss army knife essentials, and all of that will take 2 years or more for AR’s first wave of developement. Its gonna be a mess. My vision of AR won’t hit until either I make it (working on it) or around 2012 when someone dawns on it. Ego? Hell yes.
Meanwhile Larry Based Reality will be the way to go baby.
