Once in the long long ago I worked in the wild wild world of anime. I was a multiple hat wearer but for the most part I was a video editor.. trailer editor and branding/marketing nut.
This was a trailer I edited, and its a bit of a WTF edit. Its meant to be like that. Neon Genesis Evangelion at the time, and even to this day is a show with a ton of mixed messages, religious references and total carnage fest in terms of mechs vs man, god and who knows what else. It was a killer anime title, and probably put ADV on the map when it came out.
As for the how and why around the edit. Every trailer has a story of how it came to be. What footage you have, what footage you don’t have, music, or effects and the why of how you edit it along with your own style.
I’m an “edit to the beat” editor. I like trailers to pound you, wow you and make ya go- fuck ya i wanna see that. All my edits are at the mercy of the music. If the music is quiet and slow, so is the video, if its fast, the edit speeds up. Time it right and you have a festival of goodness.
The music came from one of the Eva soundtracks I think. I loved the energy of the song and thought it was a perfect connection to the godly elements of the show. Putting them together was perfect.
